Hurumanu - Solar Energy

 Solar Energy

Catching the sun movie

Materials:

  1. Cups x4
  2.  Water
  3.  Tin foil
  4.  2 sheets of white paper
  5.  1 sheet of black paper
  6. Thermometer
  7. 1 large cup

Steps

  1. The first thing you need to do was to get all of the materials that you need and put them down on your table.
  2.  When you have all of the materials go and fill all of the small cups with cold water don't put a lot of water and leave a space.
  3.  After that place a large cup and put it to one of the cup that you have to make it look like a  greenhouse.
  4.  When you've done put 1 cup to a white paper, and the second cup that has a large a cup is also put to  white paper, the third cup has to be put to a black paper and the last cup is with the tin foil.
  5.   Go get a heat lamp and leave all the cups but make sure that the heat lamp has a light on it.
  6.  After that wait at least 15 minutes and after that measure it with a thermometer but every 15 minutes.

Which surface conducts / attracts the most heat?

Findings:

In my opinion I think that we succeed but some of our temperatures went up and down which confused us but in our opinion maybe it was because we were kinda close to the door, but the really warmest cup was the tin foil because of the light that is reflecting on the foil and also it was near the heat lamp that's why it was really warm but in a few second when we turn off the heat lamp the cup that is on the tin foil slowly turning to a  cold water again.
Conclusion:

Me and my group have fun doing it and I'm really proud of my group because they try their best doing it. When me and my group we're doing the measure thing was kinda confusing because when we do it some of them are going higher but some of them are getting lower and also I think we succeed because we are almost near at the door and there's a light at the top of the surface which is good but some of the water doesn't change because some of the cups are not near at the heat lamp and I think that's why it doesn't change at all, but after all it was fun and I learn a lot of things.

Wind speed - Making an anemometer.

Anemometer

MATERIALS

  1. You need 4 cups
  2.  You need to have 2 straw, and another 2 stick.
  3.   You need to get sale tape
  4.   Also one pencil that has rubber in the end of it.
  5.   Also you need a pin.

STEPS

  1.   The first thing you need to do was to was to get the 4 cups from the teacher because that's make's the project move.
  2. After you get your 4 cups make a 2 holes in it to put the cups.
  3.   After you have the 4 cups you have to get 4 straws because if there's only 2 straw s the cups will be ending up together.
  4.   When you have does things make the straw and turn it to the shape of a cross.
  5. Then get a pin and a sale tape so the shape of the cross will be stuck together and they will not move.
  6.   Go and get a pencil and stuck them all together and after that you will have anemometer.
Once you have made an anemometer we are going to record the wind speed.

Group size: 5

You will need:

Anemometer (above)

Roles:

  • Timekeeper
  • Counter
  • Recorder
  • Anemometer Manager
  • Wind generator
  1. Mount the anemometer in a place that has full access to the wind from all directions.
  2. When the time keeper says "Go", the counter in each group will count how many times the marked cup passes them in one minute and write it down.
  3. If possible, repeat the above step four (4) times and record the average number of spins on the chart.

FINDINGS

  • Record how many times it spins using the table below.
You will need to create the wind yourself by blowing. Get 4 different wind speeds by blowing.

You will need to time them and count the number of spins.

Time IntervalNumber of Spins
1.10    36 sec
2.10    18 sec
3.1024 sec
4.10
  • Can you make a statement connecting the number of spins of your anemometer and the speed of the wind?
  • The first one was longest one because maybe because one of the person in my group didn't stop blowing into and also we are near the door, the second one was the 24 second one I think it was only like that because the person was running out of breath and also the anemometer didn't move fast at all, and the last one was only 18 because he was at the heat pump and also the problem is there's a lot of people in there so I think It was just only 18 seconds.

CONCLUSION:

My group and I did work well but the only problem is that some of the people in my group was playing and it was hard for me to listen. While where making the anemometer some of the cups were breaking because one of the people in  my group accidentally broke it and I think we try it a lot of times and always make a mistake. But I think it will work well if my group listen properly and the mistake that we did was when we're putting the straw together we didn't put some sale tape to make it strong that's why when we're blowing on the anemometer the cups always getting up together because we didn't do it properly. The point of making this anemometer was to know the how strong is the wind is or how calm is it but on that day the wind was not really strong because you can tell it if you look at the grass because grass was light and also some flags because it was also very light if you want to know the wind speed just looked at those things or using this anemometer.Doing this was very fun and I know that my group can do more better done that.

RECYCLED

Aim: To learn practical ways of recycling so that we can make our world a better place.

How can we prevent climate change by recycling these products?

Plastics: If you don't reuse plastic it would be bad since plastic does not biodegrade. Then it would be left in the landfill which will cause methane and once methane is released into the air it causes more air pollution.

Cycling or walking: If you walk and or ride a bike you lessen driving a car since cars can cause Carbon Dioxide.

Paper: If we reuse paper it will lessen the need for cutting down more trees.

Steel: If you don't reuse steel it will be the normally be labelled as garbage and will be buried under a landfill. Or we will burn them and once we burn it cause more pollution on land and air.

Video questions:

What is Zero Waste?
Zero waste is one of the quickest and affordable ways a community immediately reduces the impact on climate change.
What can we do on the planet?

  1.  Repair
  2.  Reduce
  3.  Reuse
  4.  Recycle
What do we need to recycle?
Put biodegradable materials into the green waste bin so we can help stabilise the soil. Also Plastic, steel, and the paper.
What does recycling do?
We can shut down 20% of the coal factories which can be done immediately and it can prevent pollution.
How much of our rubbish is food scraps?
90,000
What does soil do to carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?
Soil can decrease carbon dioxide but also since soil can help grow plants it is also good since plants eat carbon dioxide since that is the source to create there leaves and stems.

What do we need to do?
  1. Make Changes
  2. Have Zero waste

What is a carbon footprint?

How can you make your Carbon Footprint smaller?

Carbon footprint goals:
1. Walk to school and less driving to school
2. Take faster showers
3.during the day use the sunlight and not use the electricity

ENERGY SAVING TIPS FILM

Name 4 of the tips.

  1. Turn off your lights when your not using it or your going out.
  2.   Turn off you water when your brushing your teeth or soaping your hands.
  3.   Unplug unused electronics like charger etc.
  4.  Use cold water when your going to use washing machine.

AT WHAT RATES DO DIFFERENT ITEMS DECOMPOSE?

MY INVESTIGATION.

Image result for rates of decomposition

Choose 5 items from the list and investigate them.

Papers-  If we recycled a paper it can be made out of a Cardboard, magazines, paper towels, news paper, and a napkins. If we don't recycled paper we wouldn't have something to write on and don't have a news paper to read and I that the paper will be bad for the oceans because if it wasn't recycle the paper will be pile up in the ocean.

Leaves - Well leaves provide us foods and air to help the plants to grow, also of know that leaves breath in carbon dioxide and breath out oxygen. Leaves can use through the photosynthesis which green plants use sunlight because sunlight is used to form foods from carbon dioxide and water, also the photosynthesis help the leaves to be green.

Milk Carton - Milk carton are also made of from paperboard and it was coated polyethylene, they used paperboard because it was stronger but it was non- recycle.Milk carton can use for fun because you create something form it because a lot of people or kids use it as crafting they used the carton of the milk and they build house miniature for birds, dolls, or Lego figures. Also Milk carton has a great small size for growing small plants.

Glass Bottles - Glass is 100%  recyclable and it can be recycled without losing quality and the purity of the glass, also heating glass in the microwave is more safer that heating plastic because plastic can be melted because of the temperature so that's why a lot of people like glass than using plastic because you can save more money. Most of the people use glass bottle as D.I.Y projects because they can build painted flower vase, bottle tree or Tiki torch bottle,etc..

Orange Peels - Orange peel can help to clean dirty water also orange peel add nutrients and nitrogen to a plants as they decompose , also that orange peel has more fiber than the real fruit inside. There a lot of thing that orange peel can do like orange peel can be used to start a fire, etc. In the compost piles the orange peel can bring in phosphorus, nitrogen and the potassium ( Is a mineral ), and they say that it was a good idea to break your peel down in the a small pieces so the peel will compost faster and faster but if you peel into a big piece they can take a lot of time to compost.

You need to answer three questions.

Name:

  • Milk carton
  •     Orange Peel
  •     Leaves
  •     Glass Bottles
  •     Paper
  1. How long do they take to decompose?

  • Milk Carton - 5 years
  • Orange Peels - 3-6 months
  • Leaves - 1-3 months
  • Glass Bottles - 500 years or Forever?
  • Paper - 2-4 weeks
 2. What resources/fossil fuel are they made form?

  • Milk Carton - In my research they are made of wood pulp but it was mixed with a hardwood and a softwood.
  • Orange Peels - Orange Peels are made of Orange seeds
  • Leaves - Leaves are made of CO2 which is carbon dioxide.
  • Glass Bottles - Glass Bottles are made from sand, ash, soda, and limestone because they use natural gas and heat which they use coal to create the bottle shape.
  • Paper - It was made from Pulp Cotton from the woods in the tree's
3. How is this resource recycled?
  • Milk Carton - When we put the milk Cartoons into the bins it has to be put with the Glass containers, like Steel and etc. Some of the people put this cartoons into the bins of paper because outside of the milk cartoon is paper/ or a card paper but in the inside it was made of aluminium so it's not right to put the milk cartoons into the bins of paper.
  • Orange Peels - With the Orange Peels it easy to reuse it because you can add to your compost heat so it can create soil and it can also create different things like Limoncino or Arancino.
  • Leaves - Once you started to mowing the lawn you can add the leaves that have fallen to the ground that came from a trees, if you add them you lawn can shared them up to pieces the size of the grass that is clippings. It can cause the leaves to decompose faster and faster.
  • Glass Bottles - If you throw the Glass Bottle to the yellow bin the Glass Bottle will be taken to a machine which then separates and discolour all of the bottles inside the yellow bin. Once the Bottle are crushed and melted down the bottle can be reused to create a new glass products like the glass bottle can be turned into a glass jug.
  • Paper - When it was recycled it was taken to a machine where it will separate the kinds and grades of paper and once it was done it will wash away any extra writing or and wash any extra ink off with a soapy water. When it was done it creates a slurry which then creates different kinds of paper materials like news paper, card paper, news paper, etc.
4. How does this object contribute to climate change?

  • Milk Carton -  Well milk impacts the environment in a various way because dairy cows produce manure which releases a greenhouse gas into our atmosphere.
  • Orange Peel - There is nothing for the orange peels that can cause/contribute something to our climate change.
  • Leaves - Mostly of the leaves can help to decrease climate change and not contributing but leaves can help because they feed off carbon dioxide and release oxygen to the air.
  • Glass Bottles - When glass bottles are created it needs heat to create its form which means it needs fossil fuels which is the coal to heat up a furnace/heating system, and the carbon dioxide can't stay inside. So we let the carbon dioxide go outside into the air which cause air pollution and also our air temperature increase.
  • Paper - All of us always need a paper to write on so there are always trees need to be cut because tree's eat the carbon dioxide once the tree's are cut down. It will release its carbon dioxide that contain in the air which will also cause air pollution.

Cool to be kind - C.I.P

Hi everyone, last week in our C.I.P in cool to be kind we've been planning to have a mufti day at August 8 2019 and we also plan something what are we going to wear for our mufti day and what is the theme. The first thing we do was we get into a groups of 2 or 4 and our group there's 4 people in it, and after we have our group we plan for our theme but we have to make sure that it was based on our crazy kind of thing so we have to brainstorm something but we can't think for it because me and my friends don't usually wear something crazy and we come up with some ideas like Black and White, bright colours and pig tails (also about that the boys also need to tie they're hair into a crazy way), edgy, etc.

After we have done brainstorming we go to the mat and plan what is our theme going to be share what they brainstorm there's a lot of crazy ideas and interesting idea that the other group has and it  was cool, and one group say RADICAL RAINBOW and they voted for that  maybe they picked because they want to make the day brighter and also maybe each colours of rainbow has meaning on it ( maybe ), but when your going to wear that RADICAL RAINBOW you and your friends can pick each colour from the rainbow so it will be catchy to the other people eyes.

A few moments we have to go to our passion because it was period 3 so me and my friend go to our passion which is singing it was really fun it was kinda sad that we missed one period of our C.I.P but when we come back we have to make a poster or a DLO and in that poster it need to have WHEN, WHY, WHERE, so they have information about it. So me and my friends make a poster because we thought it was easy to make a poster than doing a DLO and when we make a poster it has to be colourful like colour it in a different colours to make it more fancy and interesting.

We also need to have a donation for our mufti day and it will be donated to the Kids Can we have to bring a gold coin and donate it to the basics children, and I think the reason for that was to help the charities and also that's why our C.I.P is called " Cool to be kind". Tomorrow is the day where we have to bring gold coins and wear the theme of RADICAL RAINBOW also the teacher are going to pick 8 volunteers who is going to collect the gold coins.

So here is the poster that I made:

DRAMA - Slam poetry & Puberty!!!

In Week 2 which is Tuesday on our Drama session, they say that they were doing slam poem and learning puberty. Well they say that a slam poetry is a kind of poem that a lot of kids used the most and also young kids and teenager. My friends say that most of the teenagers do a poem about political Issues or racism but the kids that are in their 13 s or 12 s do some poems about beauty or not being good enough. On Tuesday we also talk about Puberty just like the best thing about our body changing and us kids turning into adults the details that won't be necessary for a obvious reasons.

The puberty session, most of the kids were giggling because that usually happen for us, in puberty was kinda weird but my friends are mature but me I'm kinda mature because I don'y usually know about puberty so sometimes I'm kinda curious what's the teacher talking about. For Puberty we talk about the changes and the challenge that will going to happen to you it is where your hormones are going to start acting up. You will feel emotional or you feel something or notice something that you didn't have before.

For there slam poetry, they needed to improve our previous poem which was the BTS poem while Rieya was reading  Skyler and Shiela danced boy with Luv by BTS. They danced to the main bit which is the chorus. In the end, they still kept  doing actions for the ARMY chant for BTS, the chant goes
KIM NAMJOON
KIM SEOKJIN
MIN YOONGI
JUNG HOSEOK
PARK JIMIN
KIM TAEHYUNG
JEON JUNGKOOK
BTS!!!!

Here's the poem that they did:

Hurumanu - Water Cycle - Science!

AIM: TO LOOK AT THE WATER CYCLE AND HOW CLIMATE CHANGE IS AFFECTING IT.

Definition:

A green box with icons and white text. Text reads: Where is Earth's Water? 96.5 percent is in the oceans; 1.7 percent is in lakes, rivers, streams, and soil; 1.7 percent is in polar ice caps, glaciers, and permanent snow; 0.001 percent is in water vapor in Earth's atmosphere

Scientific words:

  • Evaporation. When water is heated by radiant energy it turns into water vapor.
  • Transpiration. Evaporation from plants.
  • Condensation. When water vapor cools, molecules join together and form clouds.
  • Precipitation. When clouds get heavy the waters falls as rain, sleet, hail, or snow.
  • Acidification: the action or process of making or becoming acidic.

We will be conducting an experiment that looks at the different ways that climate change is affecting the water cycle.
An illustration of the water cycle showing how water travels from rivers and streams to clouds to snow and back again

THE WATER CYCLE EXPERIMENT

Bag 1: Normal Water cycle
Bag 2: Water cycle with CO2 added: like Oceans in climate change
Bag 3: Water cycle with ice added: like Antarctica in climate change

Findings:

Material:

  1.  2 Plastic bag (ziplock)
  2.  Vivid pen
  3.  A cup of water and half a cup of soda water.
  4.  Food coloring
  5. Litmus paper (only for the one with soda water)

Steps:

  1.  Grab a plastic bag or we could say ziplock bag and it has to be kinda large because your gonna put some water in it and your gonna draw on it.
  2.  Grab a pen and start to draw the clouds, water, trees, and the words.
  3.  Pour a cup of water into the bag not too much.
  4.  Add at least two drops of food coloring it choice if you want different colour but it as ideally blue
  5.  Stick the bags on a window where the sun comes through regularly.

The Water Cycle: Bag 1
CO2 Water Cycle: Bag 2
Acid
Desert Water Cycle
Bag 3
Does it cycle?
Yes Yes Yes
Amount of Water
222
Acidity
121

Key: Water and acidity amount: 1 = none
2 = small drips
3 = large drips

Other comments:

1. For the water cycle 1 it has no acidity. Because it evaporated and there are small drips of water all over in the bag.

2.  In the water cycle bag 1 it successfully went through the process of the water cycle

3. because of the water cycle it had created small drips of water.

Bag 2 :
4. For our bag 2 we used soda water and we put some blue food colouring.

5.  For the CO2 water cycle bag 2  had a success in the the process despite the soda water.

6. Bag 2 created small droplets of water as part of the water cycle.

Bag 3:
7. The water cycle in bag 3 was successful.

8. For bag 3 it had contained sand so we added a small amount of water because the water cycle wouldn't work with out it.
9. Bag 3 had no form of acidity contained in it.

Conclusion:

In this project we created 3 different bags and it has to be related to the water cycle, the first one that we did was the water and the second bag that we did was different because we use soda and lastly we used was sand and a bit of water. All if the bags that we made has formed some small droplets all over the bags and only bag 1 didn't any of the acidity because it was only water but the bag 2 has some acidity because we used soda in it. Days have past we thought that this experiment will be successful but we only saw some fogging up inside the bag which is condensation/moisture. The bag 3 there was a little paper called Litmus paper and it supposed to be blue but it didn't work but that's okay I think we still have to wait.

Hexagon Conclusion:
In our project our first word was ocean for the first hexagon, we did ocean because in our opinion that where everything starts. The ocean was next to flooding because I know that ocean can cause flooding from the temperature of the climate change, then the sun evaporates water form the ocean and then it create gas. When the sun evaporates water it creates cloud which is also known as the condensation also there will be Water vapour because they connect together which is moist or moisture. Then the Carbon Dioxide since it can cause acid rain after the Carbon Dioxide there will be Precipitation and also called as the rain and when it rain it causes Freshwater also we all know that when it rain badly it can cause Hurricane and also Storms

This what it look like.

Draw a labelled diagram of the Water Cycle

Water cycle words:
  1. Precipitation - When it rains it can help the plants not to get dry and it also help them alive but it can also cause floods.
  2. Hurricanes -  There's more rainfall because of the cause of the climate change, and it can cause more damage of flooding and it can also destroy houses because of the amount of rainfall.
  3. Storms - Since our world change because of the climate change, and it change the weather  a lot and it caused many more dangerous storms.
  4. Evaporation - The water evaporate it will come back as know as snow and rain but because of the climate change and it has increased the air temperature which causes ore of the evaporation.
  5. Carbon Dioxide - Carbon Dioxide is one of the main reason why our climate change because it causes a lot of stuff like flooding and of course the air pollution.
  6. Water - The climate change has increased the sea water and the water travels to a cold places and it melts the glacier faster.
  7. Oceans - The human make a mess of the carbon dioxide, and the green house which causes the oceans help our earth's climate.
  8. Water vapour - Water vapour is like similar to green house gases because once it was realised to the air the water temperatures and it also the warming form Carbon Dioxide.
  9. Freshwater - This involve climate change the fresh water has changed over the decades because of our climate change and it also caused acid rain,Climate change has decreased the quality of the water and the salt water has also started to intrude into our water supplies.
  10. Flooding - Because of climate change the weather has change a lot because of the storms, hurricanes, it has caused many floods and also because water level raised up and it that can also caused some floods.

Water cycle words:
  1. Precipitation - Is when it rains, snow,or hail.
  2. Hurricanes - It's a cyclone with strong wind, rain, hail that mostly tropical Caribbean
  3. Storms - Storm is weather who causes strong wind, strong winds, and also it sometimes it also has thunder, and lightning.
  4. Evaporation - Well Evaporation is when the sun heat's and it's also known as radiation evaporate in the sky.
  5. Carbon Dioxide - We all know that Carbon Dioxide is a gas that is produced from factories and also from burning fossil fuels.
  6. Water - Water is a liquid that can formed the lakes, ocean and also the source that we drink from.
  7. Oceans - Ocean is parts from the sea and some of those parts are habitat of marine life.
  8. Water vapour - The water vapour is a gas that comes from water, for example clouds, fog, and also when you heat up water it causes steam that is also water vapour.
  9. Freshwater - Freshwater was the kind of water that is similar to sea, lakes, and rivers.
  10. Flooding - Flooding cause a lot of problem like example flooding can destroy the nature because of overflow dirty water, they often can be caused by rivers , and overflowing lake and seas.

TODAY YOU WILL BE INVESTIGATING THE EFFECTS THAT CLIMATE CHANGE HAS ON THE WATER CYCLE.

  1. Using your SOLO hexagons poster write a paragraph about the different aspects of climate change.
  2. Write about the following Climate Change concepts:

You can do these by powerpoint, embedding a movie , on your blog, on a doc or any other form of presentation. It is up to you.

ACIDIFICATION: HOW DOES CLIMATE CHANGE CONTRIBUTE TO THE ACIDIFICATION OF OUR OCEANS?

Definition: Acidification is like taking an action on something or the process of making on something to become acidic.

Affects the Climate Change? :
As I heard if all the humans in the world keep burning more and more fossil fuels and it change the our seawater and absorbed the carbon dioxide form our atmosphere that continue to rise, and make the sea temperatures hotter and hotter and which makes the sea more acidic refers to the decreasing level of the ocean.

DEFORESTATION: HOW DOES DEFORESTATION AFFECT CLIMATE CHANGE?

Definition: Deforestation is when it takes the action of clearing wide area of the trees all over the world.

How does it affects climate change? :
When the Deforestation take an action of clearing the forest and cut down trees or when it was burnt and it was natural but it stored carbon and it released into the atmosphere which mostly carbon dioxide. But loosing trees is bad but there are reason why they have to cut trees because it can make way for other land such as agriculture and also harvest of woods. But Deforestation affects our wildlife and cause climate change and furthermore Deforestation change the landscape.

ICE CAP MELT: HOW DOES ICE CAP MELT AFFECT CLIMATE CHANGE?

Definition: North or South Pole was covered by the ice, and when it melts it raise our sea level rise that can cause floods.

How does it affect climate change? :
We all know that the world is getting hotter and hotter because of the climate changes and it was enough to warn the Arctic melt the ice. Because of the icecaps it absorbs sunlight and the heat warms and it melt the icecaps. When the ice caps was melted because of the heat the sea level rise which cause some flooding.

WATER VAPOUR: HOW DOES CLIMATE CHANGE CONTRIBUTE TO WATER VAPOUR AND EVAPORATION?

Definition: Water Vapour was a gas it is caused by evaporation like example when something is boiling like water and etc and it also create water vapour.

How does it affect the climate change?:
What I heard is when we we're dumping greenhouse gases in the climate the air become more humid and warming the atmosphere to rise but because of the water vapour which is the greenhouse gas itself helps make the carbon dioxide more worse because it became more warmer and it leads the temperature rise.
