Decade research

Hi everyone, today I will be sharing you guys what we have been doing in a week and it was our decade work. We always do this in every Wananga class it was a literacy activity, so it was basically about us researching some interesting things that happened in 1900's to 2020's. We can do this on our own or you can be in groups but we are not allowed to work on one slide, but instead work in every each slide on your own. I had fun researching and learning a lot of things actually, there's also some words that I learn. So I worked with my friends Skyler and Shiela and after we decided to do the research, I used this website called "History.Com" I had fun using this because they will gave you a lot of information and choices of what is happening in every decade. I really like this because their story and words are easy to understand which make it more easier for me to write and finish one decade.

So I searched about what is happening in 1900's, 1930's, 1950's, 1970's and 1980's. And for very decade I choose one interesting topics and they are, " The Galveston Hurricane ( 1900's )", " The Great Depression ( 1930's )", " When Polio Triggered Fear and Panic Among parents in the 1950's. Disappeared in Argentina's Dirty War in 1970's and The popular culture in 1980's. I had fun and learn a lot of things because I didn't know them, also working with your team will make your job easier.

Here is the Slide:

Social Study Summary

Kia Ora everyone, today I will be sharing you guys what I have done for this past few hours for our Social Study Summary. This was the last video we have to watch so we have to make and create a summary what we have learn in the video. But before we write it we need to include 2-3 paragraphs and say the important parts, I had fun doing this because I learned a lot about different people and some new cities name .

So here is the Summary that I created:

In the 1830’s there was one person who was an early christian and he was known as Te Ua. And in 1862 Te Ua  saw an angel that the Maori should own all of the lands , and he believed that the Maori people owned them.He was just a founder and prophet of the HauHau church, Te Ua lived or was born in Opunake and he also established a new religion. This guy teach Christianity purified of the missionaries error, that is just their early Maori traditional way.So there is the word called Pai Marire and in English in means “ Good or Peaceful” it was also an biblical and one of the Maori’s spiritual elements and promised it’s followers deliverance from “Pakeha” domination , and in the 1860’s more and more people joined their religious because they were all frustrated  about fighting over lands.

Second part:
Then the wars started and the disputes so the government had the military just to guide and protect their lands because they didn't want the Maori to go there. Also guest what the Maori people thought some British people were spying on them, so they planned on something and killed one British missionary person and that made the British people think that the Maori people hated them. So this one Irish shoulder said and protested that it’s a murder to shot people, and ambushed and killed 7 of their men. European people killed about 2 Maori boys who were only a kid that couldn’t fight with them.

After those things are happening there’s an iwi called Tepaka who didn’t fight because they had enough about the Maori and British fighting over the lands. Then the Maori were fighting other Maori people because they thought that they were against the Maori beliefs. And in 1865 3-400 people were sent to Chatham islands because they thought they were the spies, but after some years in 1868 all of them sailed back to New Zealand because they didn’t like it there and it was their main land. Then in late 1886 Te Ua died and someone took his place, let’s go back and talk about the wars. So Te Toku Ware  was the intelligent guy who thought of some things to save their lives and he was the new leader but the problem is he doesn't want to have fights, but he has to save their people's lives. He was also the one who said that he ate kids even though it’s not true it was his way to scare them.

There’s also this guy called Tekote he was also sent to Chatham islands but escaped and left his 120 followers dead, the NZ wars took about 20 years that’s why some people left. After Tekote  escaped he did some revenge at matawhero and killed 60 people including kids.Guess what in 1872 the NZ wars are pretty much over and 3000 died and the 2000 people who died were Maoris. They said that it wasn’t about the land but it was about the land that had so much spirit.

Social media and body image

Hi everyone, today I will be sharing you guys some facts about social media in our Hurumanu 6 which is health and maths. So me and the rest of the class have a discussion of what is the impact of social media to you, actually there are lot of things happening in world and that is scamming people. Like making them believe so they can buy the object and earn a lot of money, but that is bad because your making people look dumb and make them feel stupid that they believe you.

So I learned that social can be used in a positive way or negative way, like social media give you some update of what is happening around you but in other way people are giving some hates and bad words to other people. We also learn that most of the mannequins are an unrealistic body shape and size, and those mannequins will make buy those clothes so you'll look perfect like them. Let me tell you we are all in different like the shapes, personality and looks. Then we talk about " What is the impact of messages and image on social media" like they make you feel insecure because they have perfect skin even though it was just edit. They do that because they want to become popular and famous, get a lot of likes but why can't they just be normal and natural, etc.

Social media people doesn't need to do that because they are already perfect of who they are, they don't need to edit their whole body to be slim and fit. They can just be their self instead of making people feel bad about their self.

I was happy and had fun doing this because I can relate, like when I was scrolling on my social media account I saw those people who have perfect skin and body. Sometimes I feel jealous because I want to be like them but hearing Miss Bremner words make me feel better and confident.

Beef Jerky ( Biltong )

Kia Ora everyone, so I will be telling you guys our lessons in Science which is Hurumanu 3. So this week me and the rest of the class are making an experiment called Biltong, if you are not sure what's this stuff is well it 's an traditional root dried meet in South Africa. So the first thing we have done is to try answering some question such as Hypothesis ( it's where you have to make a guess of something ),  Justification this one include a lot of stuff like to find one source of information that relates to our aim, then we need to copy and paste a website where I find the thing and fix it and changes it to my own word. Finally the last step that we need to do that took me a lot of time to write and that is the methods (Materials, Instruction ) so I have to research a website where I can read and get some ideas how to make them.

When were doing this we have to make sure we put it on our own words, and also make sure that the instructions are clear and simple to understand. Because if we don't write it properly we wouldn't be able to do the experiment right so I have to make sure, after I have done the instruction I have to read it out allowed and let my partner act it. And now that we had make the biltong and finish it quickly, we had to blog it and share the steps:

The first thing we did is we let Mrs Allan cut the meat into 1/2 inch then put it onto a big tray because we are in a group. And get two cups to put the salt and sugar, then we have to get a pinch of salt and spread them properly to the meat both sides also the sugar. After that Mrs Allan gave us a piece of string to tie them near the window because that part is cool and will make it more easier to dry.

So here is piece of work and instructions that I made:
Materials

  •  Write all of the things you need
  • 1 strip of meat
  • 2.5 tbsp coarse salt
  • 1.5 tbsp brown sugar (optional)
  •  Dry pan
  • Sharp knife
  • No metallic container
  • Plastic cover
  • Spice grinder
  • A Hook or a paper clips
Instructions
  1.  Write out the step-by-step instructions

  • Prepare all the ingredients and equipment, but make sure you have cleaned your hands before you start doing the experiment.
  • Using a sharp knife you need to cut the beef into the middle part of the meat inch thick strips pieces, but make each strip are equal and it needs to be around 6 inches long.Remember it’s not on the non-metallic container.
  • Then get a paper or a cup to put your sugar and salt, put 3 teaspoon each and mix them properly.
  • And get a pinch of salt and the sugar and spread them evenly on the top side of the meat. Then get a pinch of salt and the sugar and turn around your meat to cover the bottom part. Spread it evenly!
  • Add a hook to the thickest part of the meat, if you don’t have a hook you can use plastic covered paper clips or a peg .And hang you biltong in a dry place or cool one and ventilated(air) space from the fan that was blowing gently just to increase the airflow.
  • But don’t direct the fan at the meat/biltong because if you don’t do it the meat will harden, and separate all the meat to make sure they are not touching. You also have to place a newspaper at the bottom to catch any liquid.
  • Dry the meat 3-4 days, and test it every day by squeezing the meat on both sides and remember you need to wash your hands before you touch the biltong. And if you think it still had the given meat then it’s still wet inside.
  • It’s ready when it’s hard on the outside but kinda moist on the inside.
  • Once it was done cut them into thin slices with your sharp knife and enjoyed the biltong.
After that we have to do the results and the conclusion, so this one it include the aim which is
preserve meat using salt then what's was our result mean. After that there's the question asking
if our guest were correct and we have the discussion. I had a lot of trouble finishing this one
because I have to research " How would the salt kill the bacteria?" and doing that was not easy.
Let's say that I have to be careful of my words and remember to not use fancy words, after
researching and listening to out Science teacher was fun because I get to learn a lot of stuff
that I haven't know and some new words.

Here is the answer for the question:
If you put a pinch of salt into the meat it will immediately dry them out and the meat draws out the moisturiser ( it moisture the meat because it as an ionic compound with some strong attractive forces )  through the process of osmosis, and as the salt enters the meat cells let say the cell wall  that’s why the alters ( changes ) the structure of the muscle fibers and also the proteins.  Salt draws out all of the water on the meat, and adding salt to meat can also cause microbial cells and result in the loss of water from the cell, also causing cell death and the meat doesn’t rot.

Term 1 Year 8 Goal Setting

Hi everyone, I'm here to share to you what we have been doing for almost two weeks and that was our goal setting to show to our parent only when it's teachers and parent meeting. Our goal setting means what we need to work on and or what our aiming/achieve this year.

So I'm going to tell you what are some of my goals and also some other things.

Greatest achievement from last year?

My greatest achievement from last year is when I received at least one award at the end of term. And also when my badminton team won the first place.

Academic Goals

Short term (this term):

  • Is to try my best every period and always not giving up at every challenge I’m in, and also try new things .
  • Also to complete the task to my personal best, or finish them on time. Also I think to work on my grammar when I’m writing a story or a sentence.

Long Term (whole year):

For my whole year I want to achieve a lot of things like my maths skills or my reading skills.
Also to take responsibility for my own actions.

Non-academic goal (can be out of school):

Is to improve my badminton skills it’s just because I want to be professional at it.

Now I'm going to share to you some of my goals and what are my strength.

My Strength:

My first strength is that I act responsibly even when no one is watching, I pick this one because when I'm doing my work and our teacher is doing something or sometimes helping someone I still focus on my work so that I finish them on time.

Second strength is I use the internet and devices in a safe way, I just pick this one because I'm not a type of person who use devices a lot so I just pick this one because I don't do some weir or appropriate stuff when I'm using my devices.

Third strength is I am punctual by being in the right place at the right time, I also pick this one because I'm also not a type of person who is naughty and watch some stuff at You tube even though they have to do work. I don't do does thing because I want to finish my task on time and at the right place.

Fourth strength is I am organised and have everything that is needed for my learning, I choose this one because when our teacher ask us to bring something I always remember them so that I can bring it and I don't have to worry. I am always organised when it comes to my learning because it's just really easy to do it you just need to be a responsible person.

And my last strength I listen to understand people's ideas and opinions, I am a type of person who listen to people ideas and opinions because I want to show respect to them and I always do that when we're in a group and doing some challenge of course we have to share ideas to each other so we have to listen to everyone opinions and just giving them a feedback, and that will make happy that their ideas is awesome. How about you? How will you feel when no one is listening to you?

What I need to work on?

For my first my goal to work is to complete my work in the time I'm given, I think I really need to work on that one because sometimes I always talk to my friends or sometimes I am really having difficult time to finish it maybe because the work that I'm given is quite hard. But if I put my best effort on it I will finish it on time.

My second goal that I need to work on my emotion when I am frustrated or challenged. I pick this one because I feel like I really need to work on this one because when there's a lot of work to do or when I don't have time to finish it, I get frustrated really quick and I can't control it and don't have any idea how to calm dawn but thanks to my friends because they make me happy and that emotion will fade away. Also about the challenged and yes I have faced a lot of challenges and that makes me more frustrated and also make me nervous, I just hate that feeling because it make me think that I'm a weak person or something. But now I will try not to get nervous and faced those challenges without fear and being frustrated.

For my third one that I need to work is to share my ideas and point of view with different people. I pick this in our graduate profile because I always share my ideas to my friends it's just because I'm shy when I'm around other people that's why I'm always sharing my point of view to them(only). I just like this one because I think it will really help me to make new friends and also try some new things like experience being with other people. Try to not get nervous and get used to it.

Fourth goal that I need to work is to think creatively and critically when I'm using my chrome book or doing my own work. I also pick this one because when I'm doing my work I always don't put much effort to make it more detailed and more understandable, I just need to think creatively and critically when I'm using my chrome book. Those are the only thing that will make me achieve this goal.

For my last goal is to work on what my next step are, I pick this one because I have been working on this one for almost a month now because I just don't trust myself that much that's why I'm having a difficult time to know what are all my next step. Also for this one I need to believe to myself more, and that will make it more easier to achieve my last goal.

How will I achieve this?
Is to work harder just to achieve the things that I need to work on.Also to listen to other people's
ideas and also to all my hurumanu teachers.

Mahinga Kai

Today's lesson was about Mahinga Kai it's our reading activity that we have to do and finish. So this Hurumanu 1 was our social study and reading time, and today I have to share to you guys some facts about what I learn. I will share you guys two of the activities in the slide, I picked this two because I enjoy doing it and learn some new things about it. These two activities were about a person who have been farming to live and to eat food, I was actually inspired about the story of Karl Russell let's just say that he always work hard to feed himself, and love the nature. And he don't waste money to buy food because he knows to his self that the nature can provide him.

And then he shared some facts where he find some of the foods like at the beach, or at his backyard. This story is basically about how to preserve foods. And here is the two activity:

What does “living off the land” mean for Karl?
For Karl Russell call himself as a rich man because he was living off the land and for him it means that he was growing his own food. Like growing hunted traded or even collected himself, for him its a seasontraitional which means he work for summer, autumn and he need to preserve the food so it will last the winter. And the reward is eating the best food nature provide instead of going to supermarket and spending most of your money.
Where does he find food?
He find his food by growing them and collected them. Sometimes he goes to nearby beaches and collects some kaimoana like tuaki, kutai, paua, and kina.
Second One:
Why is knowing about seasons important?
It’s was because Karl follows their traditional seasonal and it means knowing the season was important, because if he doesn’t know what season is it he wouldn’t be able to save food for winter. Like no plants are growing in winter but instead it will die and not grow properly and you also would waste a precious seeds. Also he knows what season he will grow the plants and when he would collect them.
What happens to the kai that Karl gathers?
Karl and his whanau will hunted it first and gathered then traded there for generations, and he will eat them but still need to preserve other of the foods he collect in forest and beaches. So still have some foods to eat in winter.

Health

Hi everyone, today I will be sharing you what we have to do for our health activity. It was all about me sharing you and telling you some facts about healthy food, and some food that is not good for you. But first we talk about diabetes and guess what there 2 type of diabetes and type 1 is when your actually born with it , and then type 2 is chronic condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar. Then know we have make a blog post about one food or even more but I pick this food and it was called " Dark Ghana", from what I knew about this was it was not that bad for you but it was good for your body and your heart.

Facts about Dark Ghana:

Ingredients: COCOA MASS, SUGAR, EMULSIFIER ( SOY LECITHIN ), VANILLA FLAVOUR, MILK, PEANUT, TREE NUTS, GLUTEN 72%, AND COCOA SOLIDS MINIMUM.

Nutrition Information:
Servings per bag: 10
Serving size: 25 grams
                      Per Serving       Per 100 g
Energy           580 kJ                 2320 kJ
Protein           2.9 g                    11.4 g
Fat - Total      8.5 g                    34.0 g
  - saturated    6.0 g                    24.1 g
Carbohydrate    12.8 g                51.1 g
  - sugars           6.8 g                  27.0 g
Sodium             < 1mg                 2 mg

I was actually shock because there are only 27 grams of sugar, like from what I know some of the chocolate have more than that. Also in milo there are 46 g per 100g, and that is really bad for me I thought milo was really healthy for me because it will help you have more energy but I was wrong. Because there's a lot of sugar in a little can!

Also drinking a lot of water and some milk will help you be more energised and joyful person.

Health Activity

Good day everyone, today I will be sharing you guys what we have done this Tuesday. That activity is about how much sugar do we think is in Fizzy Drinks, Energy Drinks, Powdered Drinks, Fruit Juice, and Flavoured milk ( tsp ). But first we have to be in group of 4 to 5 people and then discuss about them, we need to agreed to everyone in the group and listen to their opinion. After discussing it with my group the whole class and I comeback to mat, and see which number is the lowest and which guess is the highest. Looking at the result of everybody was really shocking because of the guess are different like some say 1 tsp and then 14 tsp, etc.

So here is the guesses of my group :
Fizzy Drinks - 20 tsp
Energy Drinks - 7 tsp
Sports Drink - 3 tsp
Powdered Drinks - 7 tsp
Fruit Juice - 9 tsp
Flavoured Milk - 5 tsp

And after that we have to combine with the other group and do another activity which talked about this. Then grab some equipment like a cup to put the sugars, plastics and a teaspoon. And then put the exact sugars that we need for those drinks, seeing that was really shocking because there's a lot of sugar in every single drink but luckily I'm not a fan of them.

Here is my group and the topics:
