Friands - Home Economics

 In our Home Economics, we made another type of muffin but this time its not a ginger gems but it was a small litlle muffin called Friands. So here is the method, and also the ingredients and our mise en place. 

Ingredients :

2 medium egg whites

2 T plain flour

1/2 c icing sugar, plus extra for dusting 

1/2 c ground almonds

zest 1 lemon 

60 gm butter, melted

A dollop of jam on top of each one

  

Method:

1

Preheat oven 180 degree Celsius. Grease a 12-hole mini muffin tin lightly with butter, then dust with flour. Tip tin upside down and tap to remove any excess flour ( doing this will help to stop the friands from sticking to the tin, making them easier to remove once cooked).

Very lightly whisk egg whites in a medium - sized bowl until bubbles begin to appear.

Sift flour and icing sugar into the bowl containing the egg whites, then add ground almonds, lemon zest and butter.Whisk lightly until just combined - Do not over mix.

Pour mixture into mini muffin tin, filling each hole to three-quarters full. Top each with a blackberry and gently push it in ever so slightly.

Bake for 12-15 minutes lightly golden around the edges. Friands should not sink when touched lightly with your finger.Allow to cool for a few minutes before removing from tin and transferring to a wire rack ( you may need to use a knife to carefully loosen friands from the tin ). Dust with icing sugar just before serving. 

Variations to Recipe..

1 1/2 T coconut flour instead of the plain flour to make the Friands Gluten Free. Could used frozen berries of season. 

In that exercise my job, is to whisk the dry ingredients and furthermore whisk the wet ingredients. We alternate of doing the work , so everybody will be included.This one is a sort off hard, particularly the part when you need to isolate the white and yolk. FOOD GROUPS - SCIENCE

 Last two weeks, we have been looking at the body and all the food groups we need to to stay healthy and fit, but we are more focusing on water. Like how to prevent dehydration, and stuff. 

Carbohydrates : Sugary or starchy foods that are found in cereal,s, grains, fruits and root vegetables. Carbohydrates provide energy. 

Proteins : Found in foods such as meat, fish, eggs and pulses. Proteins are needed for growth and repair of muscle and other tissue. 

Lipids : Found in foods such as milk, cheese, butter and margarine. They are needed to provide energy, to insulate our organs and for making cell membranes.

Minerals : Minerals are chemical that help release energy from food or assist with chemical processes within our bodies. Minerals include chemicals such as iron, calcium and iodine. 

Vitamins: Are chemicals we need in small amounts to keep our bodies functioning. We get a lot of vitamins from fresh fruit and vegetables. Vitamins cannot be made by humans, so they must come from our diet.

Fibre : Its a nutrient we cannot break down. It helps to keep food moving and cleans the digestive system. It also acts as food source for " good" bacteria in our gut. 

So now we have to create a poster of some advantage about water, and today I worked with a buddy to help me think and we also can think - pair - share. We picked 5 things that we find, so important about the water. 

Ginger gems

 In our Home Economics, we made another type of muffin but this time its not a apple muffin instead it was Ginger Gems . So here is the method, and also the ingredients and our mise en place. 

Ginger Gems :

2 c flour 

1 t baking soda 

1 c caster sugar 

2 t ground ginger 

2 T golden syrup 

100 g butter 

2 eggs 

1 c milk 

Method :

1. Sift dry ingredients into a large bowl 

2.Warm Butter and Golden Syrup together in microwave until the butter has just melted 

3.Remove and allow to cool slightly 

4.Add eggs and milk,beat well to combine all wet ingredients 

5.Add liquids to dry ingredients and gently mix. Do not over mix it

6.Grease muffin tin with spray oil 

7.Carefully spoon mixture into prepared muffin tin. Fill about 2/3 full 

8.Bake at 200 degree Celsius for 12-15 mins. These are cooked when skewer inserted into the center come out clean or the center springs back when pressed.

 

My job that time is to quantify a portion of the dry fixings, and deal with blending the butter, syrup and the egg together. I need to hustle just a bit when I'm getting the dry ingredients since certain of groups will likewise require it. Banana and Chocolate Chip Muffin

In our Home Economics, we made another muffin but this time its not a apple muffin. Instead it was a banana and chocolate chip muffin. So here is the method, and also the ingredients ( the picture of the recipe was kind of blurry so I have to find another easy recipe in google..) 

Ingredients:

- A butter 

- 2 cups of self-raising flour 

1/2 cup of caster sugar

1/2 cup milk 

1 egg

1 teaspoon of Vanilla Essence 

2 frozen bananas

1 cup of Dark chocolate chips or chocolate drops.

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 280C

In a medium bowl add flour, caster sugar and combine well and set aside. 

Mash the banana and also set aside.

Melt the butter in a covered medium sized of bowl in the microwave in 20 seconds, and then set aside to cool slightly. 

Then add the melted butter the egg, and milk and whisk it well.

Create a well in a center of your dry ingredients and pour in the butter mixture, also add the mashed banana with the chocolate chips and lightly mix with a wooden spoon. Gently mix just until no flour is left but be careful not to over mix or the muffins will be tough.

Spray muffin tray with baking spray or I highly recommend to use a cupcake cases.

Put the muffins in the oven for 10 minutes ( bake ), then switch it to fanbake and wait for another 5 minutes. So approximately you needed wait for 10-15 minutes, until the muffins are cook.

After that wait for a minute to cool the muffins, and you're ready to eat it.  

My team work really well, and I think working in a small group is more easier because you get everything done without arguing. Because everyone has a job to do, since we have to move fast and we don't want to be late for lunch. I'm really proud of them, since they all show resilience and commitment. Also we followed the steps rightfully, and we didn't rush doing them. The appearance of he muffin looks really appetising, and look really pretty because of the color and shape of it. I also love the smell of this muffin, it was because of the vanilla essence. The texture is also good, it was soft and the top was kind of crunchy and the taste is really delicious. So probably I wouldn't change anything because the texture , the appearance, the smell, and the taste is already perfect. 
 

Spiced Apple Muffins

 Spice Apple Muffins is the other recipe we have made, on our Home Economics class. This thing is somewhat simple despite the fact that we just ask the teacher for some assistance, since we're just permitted to do it all alone and help one another. 

Fixings: 

Serves: 12 

2 cups of flour 

3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 

1/2 teaspoon salt 

1/2 cup granulated sugar 

1 cup of chopped peeled apple

1/3 cup melted butter 

2 tablespoons brown sugar 

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1. Pre - heat oven to 180 degrees 

2. Mix together flour, baking powder, salt and sugar 

3. Mix in apple, cover completely

4. Add egg, milk, and butter 

5. Pour 3/4 full into greased muffin tins 

6. Mix toppings together and sprinkle over unbaked muffins

7. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until brown

    

8. EAT THEM...

I truly love the way it ends up, and the shape was so charming. Interestingly, I think we put a lot cinnamon, and yet it actually taste flavorful. The delicate quality of the biscuits, and the taste is the awesome. I would energetically suggest this, yet a tip don't put a lot cinnamon or probably it will make taste like something different. Heart Dissection

 In our Hurumanu 4 class, we have tart another dissecting experiment but this time were dissecting a sheep heart. First up, we have to be in a group and work as team then we can start talking about the safety and the aim/ also the methods.

Aim: To look at the structure of the heart. 

 Method: 

- You need a gloves 

- Scalpel 

- Tray

- Scissors 

- Tweezers

- Cleaning supplies

- News paper 

- A sheep heart 

Safety/ Steps:

1. Wear a pair of gloves

2. Do not put anything in your mouth (fingers, pens, etc) during the dissection. Also be careful with the tools you're using, because their ends are very sharp and you might hurt yourself if you're are being silly. 

3. Put and place the news paper in the table, and also place the tray in your table.

4. Get all of the things you needed like the scalpel, scissors and other things but you have to make sure that you can control yourself when you're holding the scalpel and other pointy objects. 

5. Wash your hands thoroughly at the end of the dissection with antibacterial soap and hot water. Also we need to ensure your hands are dried after washing.

6. After doing the dissection, spray surfaces with antibacterial soap. 

Well the very first thing I did since I worked by myself, is I observe the heart and see what it actually looks like since I haven't seen a sheep heart for a long time now. At very I was actually shocked that it was kind of bigger than my fist. It doesn't smell that bad, and I actually had fun. So what I did is I take off the fat ( it protects the organs), which is the white thing around the heart. Then secondly was I found the Aorta which is the exit of the heart, and then we cut out the chamber. When I cut out the chamber I saw this strings which controlled and help keep the heart structure be stable. 

ESOL - Athletics day

Yesterday was one of the most exciting but also a fearful for everyone, the event we did was Athletics day. Everyone has to wear their kahui house color , and my one is Blue and that represent Rirorio. Everyone is doing different things, like some people is doing social ( which is when you still need to participate but really don't have to try your best ) then the other things is competitive ( you have to compete and really try your best at every sports you're doing ). I pick to do social because I'm that kind of person who really don't like participating, since I'm not that type of person who like sports. Furthermore, yesterday was actually really fun. 

Also in my P.E class we have this record when we practise for it, so here are my results.

Long Jump - 2.58 m 

Discuss - 9.6 m 

Shot put - 6. 45m 

One of my technique in Long jump is start running as fast you can, and also when you get to the line don't panic and try jump as you can. In Discuss stand with your left shoulder pointing at the target and your body facing the direction perpendicular to your shoulder (for right-handers). Keep your feet shoulder-width apart. Bend your knees slightly. Hold the discus to your front, with your throwing hand, palm down. In shot put The chest, knee and toe should be in line with each other. The thrower places the shot into his/her neck. The left arm will be extended and out from the body with a right angle relationship to the right elbow. Over exaggerate the use of the legs in the throw especially the hips.

High Jump:

The year 9 girls have to participate and do high jump as their first event. At first I really don't want to do it since I'm not that really good at high jump, and I'm scared that I might fall and hurt myself. Likewise, I still have to do it so I try my very best to do it and I'm really happy that I get out of my comfort zone. High jump is not the very fun thing I did, in the Athletics day but I still enjoy it.

Discuss: 

I'm not really good at throwing because yesterday I have a very weak arm, but luckily I pick social so I don't have to really try but to only participate and earn point for the kahui house. I wasn't scared to do it, that's why I don' have to worry about hurting myself since all I have to do is to just throw it and sit down. After everyone has their turn, we can go around and watch and support other people because we have an hour break before our next event start. 

Running: 

I skip running because I arrive late, which is kind of sad because I was looking forward of doing it. So all I did was wait and get ready for my next event which is Shot put.

Shot put: 

This is the most easiest thing we did, even though the metal ball is really heavy. 

My favorite part of this day when we watch the relays, it was exciting and scared at the same time for our kahui. I really like part when were supporting them, and it was so enjoyable. I think we win some of them, but Riroriro lost one round. Yesterday was the most fun thing we did this term, and I'm looking forward again next year.

In out class, which is Humanities and for the next three weeks we have to work independently on one of the matrix. There's four different topic we can try and do, and my one is Parihaka. I have learnt a lot of this when I was a in year 8, and the reason I did it again it because to reflect my knowledge about it
